Question
My female yellow lab continually comes home with a black substance. It smells and looks like cow manure. But it doesn't come off easy! How do I stop her from getting this substance on her? Thanks.
Answer
Most dogs like to roll in things that do not
smell too good to scent mark themselves.
Unfortunately this is not a positive thing to us as humans. But it is
a natural thing for dogs. My best advice would be to try and keep your dog home
and not let it run unsupervised. Even though the substance that your dog is
getting into is offensive and hard to remove it is not as much of a concern
as what might happen to your dog out by itself. Unfortunately there are so
many hazards out there for dogs to be injured by, such as cars, other dogs or
animals, people who will harm your dog for being on their property. Even
though some people see it as cruel to confine their dog, it is really a
kindness to protect them from harm. As far as removing the substance you can
try a mild dish washing detergent but you need to rinse the area very well.
