Question

I have a 3-year-old male Lab. He is not fixed. Do you think it is necessary for his personality? Or health? Or should we leave him alone? He does not interact with female dogs.

Answer

Studies show that spaying and neutering your dog not only helps the dog's personality but, most of all their health. Neutering completely eliminates the concern of prostate or testicular cancer in male dogs, which over the past few years has become very prevelant in Labs. Also male dogs that have been neutered live longer because they are not wandering into dangerous situations trying to breed with in-heat females. Another myth is that your dog will gain weight after being spayed or neutered. This is not true. You just need to adjust the caloric intake as dogs mature and their metabolism slows.
