Question
My puppy has had a problem with diarrhea for the last month. His stool is gritty. I was told that the grittiness could be a food allergy. Does this sound right? He has now started on Science Diet for puppies. He is also talking a pill called Sulfatrom 480. It seems to be helping the diarrhea some. His stool is toothpaste consistence now. Any suggestions?
Answer
You should have a stool sample done by your veterinarian. I would be concerned that your puppy could possibly have internal parasites that is causing the loose stools. Parasites can not only affect the puppy's stool, but also his health and growth. If the stool sample is negative for worms and giardia, etc., have your vet run a stool culture also to be sure there are no parasites. The fact that you have changed the puppy to a good name brand diet is good, but still your puppy should have the above done for his overall health.
