Question
We are thinking of getting another dog. Our 3-year old yellow lab (male) is one of the nicest dogs one could meet. He is very friendly, etc., and does well around most other dogs. Occasionally, he seems to not like one dog in particular (growls more, when on leash acts a bit aggressive, etc.), but nothing alarming. We are sure he would accept another puppy, but wanted some clarification. Thank you.
Answer
If your dog is as mellow as you say, it should be no problem introducing a puppy to your family. Just make sure your older dog's routine stays as normal as possible, and add the puppy into his and your already established routine as not to upset his. If your male dog is neutered it should not make a difference if you choose a male or female companion. But if your older dog is not neutered, dominance problems may develop as the puppy matures if you purchase a male puppy.
