Question

My BYD has a black nose. He is 19 months old and we noticed that he lost the pigment in his nose last fall and it returned to black in the spring. We live in New England and are starting to notice this same occurrence beginning again this fall. Is this normal?

Answer

Answer from the Vet:
Yes, it is normal. Pigment changes in a dog's nose can be due to digging (rooting with nose), environmental changes, and several other factors.

A Reader of the BigYellowDog.com site says: I just wanted to pass on a tip I received last year from a girl who had worked for a vet. When I first got my Lab, he had a beautiful black nose, but it turned pink. She told me that if I got rid of all my plastic bowls and replaced them with ceramic crocks that his nose would return to black. Even though I was skeptical, I tried it. By the end of three months, his nose was black again. A year later, it is still black. I can't guarentee this will work, but I would like to pass this information on to others. I would also love to hear from anyone who tries it as to whether or not it worked for them.

Editor's Note: This is probably the most asked question to the BigYellowDog.com site. Our BYD, Gabby, goes through a new nose color it seems every six months or so. However, I have also seen her bury things with her nose a lot, so that might be the reason for hers.
