Question
A friend of mine owns an active and affectionate 2-year-old yellow Lab with a propensity to recurrent urinary tract infections. His dog was thoroughly tested and evaluated at the Vet hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (an excellent facility) and was declared to be free of any congenital anatomic abnormalities. I have not read in any of the literature on the breed that this is a breed-associated problem and would appreciate any information that you could provide on the subject. I neglected to tell you that the dog is female and otherwise physically and behaviorally normal. Thank you for your time and assistance.
Answer
You are correct this is not a breed specific problem in Labs. I would suggest a dietary change, which may have already have been instructed by the university. I do believe that some dogs, just as some people, are more susceptible to some conditions while others are not.
