Question

Our Lab has crusty sores and bare spots that have been diagnosed as a yeast infection by Iowa State University. Our vet suggested washing him with Selsun Blue. Now he is really itchy and we are concerned about all the bare spots with winter so close. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank You.

Answer

There are several new shampoos that are specifically formulated to use on dogs. Sometimes human shampoos, if they work well at first, will eventually dry out your pets coat. A common belief used to be that you could over-bathe your dog. Now, studies have shown it is not the bathing that is over done, but the type of shampoo that is used in bathing. It is actually a good idea to bathe most dogs with allergies at least once weekly to keep the allergens off the coat. Ask your veterinarian if he/she could order a product called Allergroom made by a company called Virbac. I would also alternate this shampoo with a regular good dog shampoo such as Bio-groom every other shampooing.
