Not much to say yet as we have only had him for a few weeks but a great dog so far, very quick learner, no problem house breaking, now if our older hound could just keep up with him ! ...

Question

My 20-month-old neutered male purebred yellow Lab is a picture of health. A strange lump on the front corner of his left lower jaw was diagnosed as osteo-sarcoma after x-rays and a biopsy. We opted for a more conservative approach and he had 2/3 of that side of the jaw removed four days ago. He is recovering quite well and steadily adapting. Are there any long-term side effects we should be aware of? And, is there anyone, anywhere, that can perform reconstruction of this portion of the jaw? Thank you!

Answer

Most dogs or animals do very well after major surgeries such as your dog's. If he heals well and can eat and drink normally, I would not be too concerned. If appearance is important for you or concerns you, there are board certified veterinarians that would be willing to help. Depending on where you live, I would check with a speciality veterinary clinic or a teaching veterinary hospital. Both will have board certified surgeons available.
