Question
Our Yellow Lab puppy, Jake, is 11 weeks old and seems to have a huge appetite. He currently eats 3-4 cups of Purina Puppy Chow per day. How much should we be feeding him and for how long should we continue to feed him puppy chow?
Answer
Your puppy will continue to grow until he is a year old and will continue to build muscle mass and mature until he is 2-3 yrs old. You should continue to feed him Puppy Chow until he is a year old. The only reason you would not continue him on Puppy Chow would be if he is growing too rapidly and has medical problems because of this. Even though puppy chow is a good over-the-counter food, puppies will consume more of this diet than they would a premium food such as Iams or Science Diet. They also will have more stool with Puppy Chow because of the larger consumption. Some of the premium foods make diets specifically for large breed puppies to help with growth problems. You could check with your regular veterinarian for these recommendations.
