Question

I have two black Labs. The male is six years old, and the female is one year old. Both of them are not fixed because I would like to have puppies. Starting a couple of weeks ago, my male became very agitated and he stays after the female most of the time. The female is not in heat. What do I have to do to calm down the male, considering that I don't want to have puppies until next year?

Answer

Your male will probably act like this until your female is bred, and maybe even after. This is normal behavior and why some breeders house males and females in separate areas. At any rate, I would recommend that you wait until your female is at least two years old before you breed her.
