Question

My dog is 5-years-old and has seizures very frequently. I was wondering what can I do at home to help him. I've taken him to the vet many times and I dont want to put him on medication. I love my dog and I don't think its time to put him asleep. Please help me.

Answer

If your dog has been examined by your veterinarian and diagnosed with what we call idiopathic epilepsy (epileptic seizures that we have no known physical reason for), the main thing to be concerned about is that your dog cannot injure itself by seizuring into an object or having something fall on it. It is a good idea to record on a calendar the dates that your dog seizures, time of day, and duration of the seizure for your veterinarian. Sometimes, this data shows a pattern that is helpful in treating seizures. If the seizures become more frequent (several per day or week) you may want to consider medication to prolong your dog's quality of life. The main medication used for seizures can be used safely if the dog's liver function is checked approximately every six months.
