Question
My dog's hair has started falling out around the base of the tail, slowly on his sides, and even by his feet. Am I right considering that he might have an allergy to fleas or flea saliva? He's not on Advantage, and I've found two fleas on him. Should I simply put him on Advantage? Will this work better for him that traditional products such as sprays, shampoos, etc.?
Answer
Yes, Advantage would be the product of choice in my opinion. Advantage works very well as a flea control because the flea does not have to bite the dog to die. This cuts down on the flea allergy bite problem. In combination with the Advantage, I would recommend that you bathe your dog first with a anti-allergen shampoo like allergroom. If the Advantage is applied and left on for 24 hours, it is safe to bath your dog and the Advantage will not wash off. If the problem persists and your dog still seems uncomfortable, please speak with your regular veterinarian about adding an antihistamine to help him be more comfortable.
