Question
A friend of mine has a 2-year-old yellow female Lab. Because of removal of a lypoma, a blood panel was drawn and it showed liver enzymes were elevated. The vet put her on steroids and after two weeks levels were even higher. She seems well and eats well. Not a sick dog at all. A second opinion from another vet suggested putting her on a milk thistle tea several times a day. New blood levels will be done in two weeks. Any suggestions as to what is causing this or what to do about it?
Answer
My recommendation would be to get a definitive opinion as to whether the liver enzyme elevation is a primary or secondary condition. You need to find out if the dog truly has liver disease or if there is another cause for the elevated liver enzymes. If your current vets are unable to determine this, you could seek further diagnostics at a veterinary university close by or a speciality clinic for veterinary medicine.
