Question
My wife and I went to pick out a yellow Lab puppy. The puppy that we picked out seems to have eyes that are not looking straight but slightly outward. The puppy is only 4-weeks-old. Is this normal? The breeder said it was probably because it was so young and under-developed. I would like to know if that is something to be concerned about? The puppies aren't ready for 2 more weeks so we have a chance to pick another one if we have to.
Answer
It would be hard to say without physically evaluating the puppy. Puppies change rapidly from 4 weeks on. I would recommend visiting the puppy and watching it play. If you still have concerns, make the breeder agree to let you have the puppy checked by your regular veterinarian for any problems. Most good breeders will give you 72 hours for a physical examination of the puppy. Also, most reputable breeders will stand behind what they breed. If this breeder will not do that, you may want to consider looking for another breeder.
